Article 17: Spiritual Lessons from Big Omaha
I am here at Big Omaha, a conference for tech startups and entrepreneurs. There is so much excitement about working to make cool stuff that changes the world…in some way.
GK Chesterton said that no man visits a brothel looking for something bad and I would argue that very few of these entrepreneurs are looking for something bad either.
Quite the opposite….they are looking for something very good. Striving to make an incredible and cool business that makes meaning can be a great way to spend your livelihood.
Yet it is the striving that I think is so cool, so deeply a part of us.
We were created with an internal compass, a compass that always points towards God, toward the eternal. And since we were thown into a world of things, we so often try to head in the direction of God….yet we do it through these finite things.
There is something beautiful going on at this conference and all of this work can be very worthwhile, all of the ernest striving can be very good….as long as all of us realize, that as great as it is….making really, really cool stuff will not quite satisfy that longing.
As long as all of us recognize that God, not a tech startup is our True North….then we can live with joy…..and a bit of peace.
